Matthew 3:13-17

Aug 17, 2025    Pastor Joseph Hearn

When Jesus steps into the Jordan River, it is no ordinary man entering the waters. This is the same Holy One who descended in fire on Sinai, who sat enthroned in Isaiah’s vision, who stood before Joshua as Commander of the Lord’s army. Throughout history, when God revealed Himself, people trembled in holy fear—because to see Him was to face death. Yet here, the eternal Son humbles Himself to identify with sinners, fulfilling all righteousness. John trembles, the Spirit descends, and the Father thunders from heaven, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.” At this moment, the Trinity unveils Jesus as the Spirit-anointed Messiah and the divine Son of God. The question is, will we respond with the reverence and repentance of those who cried, “What must we do?” or with the pride and resistance of the Pharisees?
